영작연습 프로젝트 Day 88

짙은 안개 였다. 짙은 안개 때문에 운전중에 앞이 잘 안보였다. 낮동안에 안개가 걷혔다. 일기예보에선 다음 주에 눈이 온다고 했다.

The fog was dense. I couldn't see well because of the heavy fog while driving. During the day, the fog cleared up/cleared out.

The forcast says/ They say It's going to snow.

get going 출발하다, 움직이다. 아직 출발전에 말하는 표현.

영작연습 프로젝트 Day 87 I responded in kind, only to be wrong.

여자가 저를 플러팅하는 건지 단순히 친절한 건지 알아채는 게 진짜 어려운 것 같아요. 제가 여자랑 대화할 때마다 기본적으로 "그들은 날 좋아하지 않는다"고 가정하거든요. 그래서 실제로 누군가가 플러팅을 하면 전혀 알아채지 못합니다.

It's hard to tell whether a girl is flirting with me or just being nice to me. Whenever I talk to a girl, I basically assume that "they don't like me". So I never notice it when someone is actually flirting with me.

한 번은 커피숍에 앉아 있었는데 다른 테이블이 다 차 있어서 어떤 여자가 제 테이블에 앉아도 되냐고 물었어요. 저는 허락했죠. 그러자 그녀가 제 커피를 보고 "오트밀크 콜드브루를 드셨네요. 제가 항상 마시는 커피인데요. 우리가 만난 건 운명 아닐까요?"라고 말했어요. 저는 "아니요. 오트밀크 콜드브루는 가장 흔한 커피 주문이에요"라고 대답했어요. 그러자 그녀는 "맞아요. 혹시 여자친구를 위해 커피를 사신 건가요?"라고 물었어요. 저는 "아니요, 여자친구 없어요"라고 말했죠. 그녀가 무언가 대답하려고 할 때 저는 "저 이제 가야 해요. 일이 있거든요"라고 말하고 떠났어요. 

One time I was sitting in a coffee shop, and since all the other tables were occupied, a girl asked me if she could sit at my table. I said yes. Then she looked at my coffee and said, "You had a cold brew with oat milk. That's my go-to. Don't you think it's fate that we met?" I replied "No, cold brew with oat milk is one of the most common coffee orders." Then she said "Right, Did you order the coffee for your girlfriend by any chance?" And I responded "No, I don't have a girlfriend. But she was about to respond, I said "I should go now, because I have work." and I left.

2. go-to는 형용사처럼 쓰인다. 믿을 수 있고 늘 선택하는 것. "Soup is my go-to comfort food"

차를 운전하며 집에 가는 도중 갑자기 깨달았어요. "잠깐, 그녀가 나한테 플러팅한 건가?" 아직도 모르겠어요. 전에 여자들이 플러팅한다고 생각해서 플러팅으로 답했다가 "아니"라는 대답을 들은 적이 많거든요. 그래서 앞으로도 어떻게 해야 할지 모르겠어요.

On my way home driving, I suddenly realized, "Wait, was she flirting with me?" I still don't get it. I've heard so many 'no's because I used to think girls were flirting with me and responded in kind, only to be wrong. So now, I still don't know what to do.

영작연습 프로젝트 Day 86 He was telling me about his job, and he pulled someone over

 Gen Z 세대는 경찰이 되면 안 된다는 생각이 들어요. 제 친구가 최근 경찰이 됐는데, 그 얘기를 듣고 나서부터 미래가 두렵습니다. 친구가 자기 일에 대해 말하면서 "어떤 사람을 세웠는데 그가 진짜 수상쩍게 행동해서 티켓을 끊어줬다"고 했어요.

I think Gen Z shouldn't become police. My friend recently became(과거) a police officer(수일치), once I heard his story, I've started to feel afraid for the future. He talked about his work and said "I made someone stopped and gave the driver ticket because his behavior was sus."

He was telling me about his job, and he said, "Yeah, I pulled this guy over, and he was acting hella sus, so I gave him a ticket."

1. pull over 갓길에 대다, 정차하게 하다.

우선, 경찰이 운전자에게 "수상해(sus)"라는 말을 했다는 게 믿기 어렵습니다. 여기 Among Us 게임도 아니잖아요. 그런데 더 심각한 이야기가 나왔습니다. 친구가 그 운전자에게 면허증을 요구했는데, 그 면허증을 받는 순간 웃음을 참지 못했다고 하더라고요. 왜 그러냐고 물어보니, 운전자의 이름이 바솔로뮤(Bartholomew)였다고 했습니다. 경찰이 되면 사람의 이름을 보고 웃는 건 안 된다고 말했죠. 그럼 이제 내가 만약 경찰에 잡히면, 벌금뿐만 아니라 경찰에게 놀림받을 걱정도 해야 한다는 겁니까?

First of all, I cannot believe that a police officer used the word "sus" to describe a driver. This isn't a game of Among Us! But it gets even worse. My friend asked the driver for their license and as soon as he received it, he couldn't(시제) help but laugh. When I asked him why, he said it was because the driver's name was(시제) Bartholomew. So I told him you should not laugh at someone's name as a police officer. So now, if I ever get pulled over, do I have to worry about being teased by the police on top of getting a ticket?

He asked the person he pulled over for their license, and right when they gave it to him, he accidentally laughed. I asked him why, and he said it was because the name on the license was Bartholomew. I told him, "Bro, you can't laugh at someone's name when you're a cop." Now, from this moment on, if I ever get pulled over, I have to worry about getting a ticket and getting roasted by the cop. We are so doomed.

We are so doomed 우리 개망했어! 미래에 대한 절망적인 감정을 표현하는 캐주얼한 문장. 좀 과장된 느낌이 있다. 실제로 망했다기 보다는 상황이 심각하다고 느끼는 순간적인 감정을. "X됐다!"

기타표현 요즘은 그런 생각이 들더라.

생각이 든다

"I've been thinking lately that..." 자연스러운 대화에서 많이 쓰인다.

I've been thinking lately that people are living faster-paced lives. I was talking with a friend, and it just hit me how rushed everyone seems these days.

"I find myself thinking that..." 주관적인 발견을 강조. 어떤 생각이 자연스럽게 떠오르거나 자신도 모르게 그런 결론에 도달했을 때 사용하는 표현.

"It occurs to me that..." 보통 새로운 깨달음을 나타낼 때. 한동한 숙고 후 결론에 도달하거나, 갑자기 어떤 생각이 떠올랐을 때 사용하는 표현.

After watching this news, it occurs to me that social media has a greater influence than I realized.

"My perspective has shifted, and I now think..." 생각이 바뀌었음을 설명하는 표현.

As I've grown older, my perspective has shifted, and I now think that work-life balance is more important than ambition. 

영작연습 프로젝트 Day 85 Mom quickly carried him out of the store.

 다음 날 학교에 갔더니 선생님이 “이제 현실로 돌아갑시다”라며 갑자기 시험을 내시는 거예요. 재밌는 날은 항상 놓치고, 평범한 학교 생활로 돌아오는 일이 반복되더라고요. 그 후 Crumbl에서 호박 롤 쿠키가 한정 수량으로 딱 두 개 남았다는 소식을 들었어요. 제 뒤에 있던 작은 아이가 너무 신나서 자기도 쿠키를 살 수 있다고 생각했나 봐요. 하지만 제 룸메이트들이 호박 쿠키 두 개를 꼭 사오라고 해서 저는 두 개 다 주문했어요.

And I went school the next day, a teacher said "Let's go back to reality" and gave us an exam. Missing exciting days and returning to normal school life keep repeating to me. And then I heard the news that there are only two limited pumpkin roll cookies at Crumbl. And a kid behind me was too excited, thinking that he is able to get the cookie. But my roomies told be I need to get two pumpkin cookies so I got all two.

Later, at Crumbl, there was a limited supply of pumpkin roll cookies--only two left. A little kid behind me got excited, thinking he'd get one. But my roommates had asked me to get two pumpkin cookies, so I ordered both.

그 아이는 제가 마지막 두 개의 쿠키를 가져가자 울면서 소리를 지르기 시작했어요. 아이 엄마는 급히 아이를 안고 가게를 나갔고, 다시 돌아오지 않았어요. 사실 저는 그 아이에게 제 쿠키 하나를 주려고 계획했었어요. 그런데 기회가 없었죠. 하지만 그 아이의 반응을 이해해요. 호박 롤 쿠키가 정말 맛있었거든요.

And the kid started to scream and cry once I got the last two of them. His mom hold him up and went out, and they never come back. Actually I was thinking to give one of my cookies to her. I had no chance. But I understand her response. The pumpkin roll cookie was insanely delicious.

영작 스타일을 좀 바꿔보려고 한다. 

영작은 하는데 실제 일상 대화에 바로바로 도움이 되는 느낌이 잘 안들었다. 일상 생활에 도움이 되도록 유튜브 영상 하나를 골라서 스크립트를 영작하려는데 의외로 꽤 길다. 몇일 나눠서 영작하고, 그 영상을 만든 주인은 뭐라고 했는지 비교해보면서 찐 원어민 영어를 습득해보자!

2. "직원이 저에게 작업 거는 걸까요"에서 현재 진행형을 쓰면 박스에서 발견한 그 순간에 말하는 느낌. 여기선 이 상황이 단 한번 있었고, 영상은 그 이후에 찍힌거니까 현재형이 조금 더 적합해보인다.
